Eritrea in the same way as the Erythrean sea took its name from a Greek name which means “red land”. To the west of Eritrea is Sudan, Ethiopia to the south and Djibouti to the southeast. Eritrea has an extensive Red Sea coastline to the east and directly across are Yemen and Saudi Arabia. Eritrea is approximately 11 600 kilometers squared. The population is 6 million. The US had imposed a federation of Eritrea and Ethiopia in 1952 causing a 30 year war with Eritrea gaining back her independence in 1993. The capital of Eritrea is Asmara. Freedom of Expression organization rate Eritrea poorly. There are 13 languages in Asmara. One has no living speakers. The literacy rate is 37%
